UNS N02200 Weld Neck Flange — Nickel 200 (2.4066), Technical Specifications

What is a UNS N02200 (Nickel 200) Weld Neck Flange?

Nickel 200 (UNS N02200 / 2.4066) is not an alloy but the element itself — commercially pure wrought nickel at 99% minimum. That purity owns two duties nothing else matches: caustic soda at every concentration, up to and including molten anhydrous NaOH, and contamination-free service where nothing leached from the metal is acceptable. A N02200 weld neck flange pairs that chemistry with a long tapered hub butt-welded to the pipe, bore matched to schedule, forged to ASTM B564.

The one design rule to know: standard Nickel 200's 0.15% max carbon graphitizes above 315 °C, slowly embrittling the metal — so sustained hotter service (molten caustic fusion, hot dry halogens to ~600 °C) specifies the low-carbon Nickel 201 (N02201, C 0.02 max). Below 315 °C the grades behave identically, and dual-certified heats cover both callouts.

On the nickel-family ladder, Monel 400 adds copper for strength, seawater and HF liquor; Inconel adds chromium for heat; Hastelloy adds molybdenum for the worst acids. Pure nickel anchors the family where purity and caustics rule.

Why Pure Nickel Still Has No Substitute

Caustic Soda, Start to Finish

NaOH and KOH at every concentration — through evaporation to 70%+ and into molten anhydrous caustic — at corrosion rates measured in fractions of a millimetre per decade.

Purity as a Property

No copper, chromium or molybdenum to leach — food, synthetic fibre and high-purity chemistry specify the element when contamination budgets are parts per billion.

Dry Halogen Duty

Stable halide films carry pure nickel through dry chlorine, fluorine, HCl and HF gas at temperatures that consume most alloys.

Nothing to Go Wrong

A single-phase element: no sensitization, no intermetallics, no chloride SCC — and full toughness from cryogenic up.

200 & 201 From One Forge

Standard and low-carbon grades forged side by side — the 315 °C decision handled with one enquiry.

Welding Nickel 200 — Sulphur is the Enemy

Nickel 200 welds with ERNi-1 / ENi-1 filler and the strictest version of nickel cleanliness: sulphur from markers, cutting oils, grease or shop grime embrittles hot pure nickel faster than any of its alloys, so joints are degreased and handled clean end to end. Low heat input, no preheat, no PWHT — the single-phase metal has nothing to sensitize, and welds enter caustic service as-made.

The 315 °C rule: standard Nickel 200 graphitizes in sustained service above 315 °C — specify Nickel 201 (N02201) for hotter duty, good to ~600 °C in caustic and dry-halogen environments. State the design temperature in the enquiry and the grade follows automatically.

Where UNS N02200 Weld Neck Flanges Are Used

Chlor-alkali leads: caustic evaporators, crystallizers, fusion equipment and transfer lines — the duty the metal owns outright. Halogen chemistry follows with dry chlorine and fluorine systems, then food and beverage processing, synthetic fibre production, high-purity and electronic chemistry, and cryogenic services. UNS N02200 Weld Neck Flanges — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a UNS N02200 (Nickel 200) weld neck flange?

It is a weld neck flange forged from Nickel 200 — commercially pure wrought nickel, 99% minimum, UNS N02200 / 2.4066 — to ASTM B564. The long tapered hub is butt-welded to the pipe with the bore matched to the pipe schedule, giving a radiographable, fatigue-resistant joint in the element itself rather than an alloy: the material caustic soda plants, food chemistry and dry-halogen systems specify when nothing dissolved in nickel is acceptable.

Why is pure nickel the caustic soda material?

Because nothing else matches it across the whole range. Stainless steels stress-crack in hot caustic; even high-nickel alloys eventually give way as concentration and temperature climb. Pure nickel serves sodium and potassium hydroxide at every concentration — through evaporation to 70%+, and up to and including molten anhydrous caustic — with corrosion rates measured in fractions of a millimetre per decade. Caustic evaporators, crystallizers and fusion pots are built around this property.

What is the difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201?

Carbon. Nickel 200 allows up to 0.15%; above about 315 °C that carbon slowly precipitates as graphite at grain boundaries and embrittles the metal. Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) caps carbon at 0.02%, removing the mechanism, and is the correct grade for sustained service above 315 °C — molten caustic fusion being the classic case. Below that temperature the two behave identically; we supply both, and dual-certified 200/201 material where the heat qualifies.

What is the difference between Nickel 200 and Monel 400?

Monel adds a third of copper to the nickel, roughly doubling strength and improving seawater and hydrofluoric acid behaviour — the general-purpose workhorse. Pure nickel gives up that strength to keep two things Monel cannot offer: the ultimate caustic resistance, and elemental purity for food, synthetic fibre and high-purity chemistry where copper contamination is unacceptable. Pick by the process sheet: NaOH or purity says Nickel 200, seawater or HF says Monel.

Can Nickel 200 handle chlorine and fluorine?

Dry, yes — famously. Pure nickel forms stable halide films in dry chlorine, hydrogen chloride, fluorine and hydrogen fluoride at elevated temperatures, making it a standard material for halogen production and handling up to several hundred degrees. The qualifier matters: wet halogens are aggressive acids and change the picture entirely, so moisture control defines the design.

What are the equivalent designations for Nickel 200?

UNS N02200; Werkstoff Nr. 2.4066; EN Ni 99.2; JIS NW 2200; BS NA 11; GOST НП-2; and AFNOR N-100M. Its system partners share the chemistry: ASTM B161 seamless pipe, B366 butt-weld fittings, B162 plate and B564 forgings. An enquiry in any of these designations is quoted as the same material.

What is the chemical composition of UNS N02200?

Per our supply practice: nickel 99.00% minimum — the material is the element — with residuals capped at carbon 0.15%, manganese 0.35%, silicon 0.35%, copper 0.25%, iron 0.40% and sulphur 0.01%. For service above 315 °C, the low-carbon variant Nickel 201 caps carbon at 0.02% to prevent graphitization.

What are the mechanical properties of N02200 flanges?

Typical annealed properties run 462 MPa tensile, 148 MPa yield and 45% elongation; the governing ASTM B564 minimums are 380 MPa (55 ksi) tensile, 105 MPa (15 ksi) yield and 40% elongation, demonstrated on every certificate. Strength is modest — pure nickel is bought for chemistry, not muscle — and the flange pressure-temperature ratings already account for it.

Which pipe and fittings do N02200 weld neck flanges mate with?

ASTM B161 seamless Nickel 200 pipe is the standard partner, with B366 butt-weld fittings and B162 plate completing the system. The weld neck bore is machined to the pipe schedule you state, so the bore runs flush through the joint and the bevel arrives ready for a matched-chemistry butt weld.

How are Nickel 200 flanges welded to pipe?

With ERNi-1 / ENi-1 filler and the strictest version of nickel-alloy cleanliness: sulphur from markers, cutting oils, grease or shop grime embrittles hot pure nickel faster than any of its alloys, so joints are degreased and handled clean. Low heat input, no preheat, no PWHT — the single-phase metal has nothing to sensitize, and welds enter caustic service as-made.

What temperature range can Nickel 200 flanges be used in?

From cryogenic — pure nickel keeps full toughness at liquefied-gas temperatures — up to 315 °C in the standard grade, where the carbon-graphitization limit applies. Above that, specify Nickel 201, which serves to about 600 °C in caustic and dry-halogen environments. The usual nickel caution about hot sulphur-bearing atmospheres applies to both.

Is Nickel 200 suitable for food and pharmaceutical service?

Yes — elemental purity is one of its two callings. With no copper, chromium or molybdenum to leach, pure nickel serves food processing, synthetic fibre spinnerets and couplings, and high-purity chemical duty where product contamination budgets are written in parts per billion. Fine surface finishes and full traceability support validation paperwork on request.

Is Nickel 200 magnetic?

Yes — pure nickel is ferromagnetic at room temperature, with a Curie point near 358 °C. A magnet sticking to a nickel-alloy flange is often the quickest field check that it is Nickel 200 rather than an austenitic look-alike, and it is entirely normal — PMI confirms the chemistry.

What testing and certification do you supply with N02200 flanges?

Every lot ships with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates covering chemical analysis — demonstrating the 99% nickel minimum and carbon level — mechanical properties and the anneal record, with 3.2 certification witnessed by Lloyd's, DNV, BV or TÜV on request. We also offer PMI verification, hydrostatic testing and dye-penetrant examination to project specifications, with full heat-number traceability.

Where are UNS N02200 weld neck flanges used?

Caustic soda plants above all — evaporators, crystallizers, fusion equipment and transfer lines — plus chlor-alkali and fluorine chemistry handling dry halogens, food and beverage processing, synthetic fibre production, high-purity chemical and electronic chemistry, and cryogenic systems. Wherever the process sheet says concentrated NaOH or zero metallic contamination, pure nickel is the named answer.

What sizes and standards do you manufacture N02200 weld neck flanges in?

From 1/2 inch NB to 56 inch NB: ASME B16.5 Class 150 to 2500 up to 24 inch, ASME B16.47 above, and European PN 2.5 to PN 400 patterns to EN 1092-1, DIN and BS 4504. Raised face is standard, flat face and ring joint on request, and every bore is machined to the mating pipe schedule from Sch 10 through XXS.

Do you keep Nickel 200 weld neck flanges in stock? What is the lead time?

Pure nickel moves in project quantities, so common caustic-plant sizes in Class 150 and 300 rotate through production with popular items often available, while larger diameters, higher classes, Nickel 201 and witness-tested lots are forged to order — typically 4 to 6 weeks. Prices track the nickel market directly, so quotations carry a validity period.

Do you export UNS N02200 flanges outside India?

Yes. Tesco Steel & Engineering is an ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer based in Mumbai, and Nickel 200 flanges ship to chlor-alkali, chemical and food-industry projects across the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Americas. Flanges travel face-protected and seaworthy-packed, with full heat-number and test traceability.
