Nickel 200 Blind Flanges — UNS N02200 Pure Nickel Blind Manufacturer

Tesco Steel & Engineering forges Nickel 200 blind flangesASTM B564, UNS N02200, EN 2.4066 — to ASME B16.5 Class 150–2500 from ½″ to 24″ NB and to ASME B16.47 up to 60″. Not an alloy at all: 99% pure nickel, the metal every grade before it merely borrows. The caustic ladder runs on nickel content — stainless cracks, Monel 400 covers the middle — and Nickel 200 stands on the top rung: hot concentrated NaOH and KOH to the highest temperatures and concentrations any common flange metal holds, plus the chlor-alkali, food-purity and dry chlorine / HCl gas franchises. One famous split: above 315°C, carbon graphitizes standard 200 — the low-carbon Nickel 201 (N02201) takes over, and we forge both. General alkali economy: Monel 400. Heat plus chlorine: Inconel. Facings: BLRF, BLFF or BLRTJ. Every lot with EN 10204 3.1/3.2 MTC. ISO 9001:2015, made in Mumbai, India — exported to 50+ countries.

Nickel 200 Blind Flanges — Specifications at a Glance

What is a Nickel 200 Blind Flange?

The pure metal. A solid forged disc of commercially pure nickel — 99.0% minimum (ASTM B564 / UNS N02200 / EN 2.4066) — with no bore, closing pipes, valves and nozzles in the services pure nickel owns: hot concentrated caustic soda and alkalis above all, plus chlor-alkali cells, food and high-purity processing, dry chlorine and HCl gas. Everything except the nickel is a residual cap — no chromium, no molybdenum, no alloying. Mechanicals 380/103 MPa annealed — specified for chemistry, never strength. Above 315°C: the low-carbon Nickel 201 variant. Dimensions per ASME B16.5 / B16.47 in RF, FF and RTJ facings; EN 10204 3.1 certified.

Why Purity Is the Specification

The Caustic Summit

Nickel is intrinsically indifferent to hydroxides, and every dilution dilutes the gift. At 99% it holds hot concentrated NaOH and KOH — molten anhydrous caustic included — to temperatures and concentrations nothing below it on the ladder survives.

Nothing to Shed

Food, soap, pharma and fine-chemical circuits specify the pure metal because a 99% nickel surface contributes no chromium, copper or molybdenum ions to the product — purity as a process guarantee, closure included.

The Dry-Halogen Franchise

In dry chlorine and HCl gas, pure nickel's chloride film holds to temperatures few materials at any price can match — the standard of chlorination and HCl synthesis trains. The word doing all the work is dry: wet chlorine changes the map toward Hastelloy.

The 315°C Split

Standard 200's carbon (≤0.15%) slowly graphitizes above 315°C, embrittling grain boundaries. Nickel 201 (N02201, C ≤0.02%) removes the mechanism and serves to ~600°C — the design temperature picks the variant, once, at specification.

Why Nickel 200 Blind Flanges Are Specified

The Caustic Wrote the Line Class

Evaporators, concentrators and fusion circuits running hot concentrated NaOH specify the pure metal because nothing cheaper survives — the closure carries the same 99% certificate as the vessel.

Purity as Process Guarantee

Food, soap and pharmaceutical caustic circuits keep alloying ions out of the product by keeping them out of the metal — a specification logic no alloy can satisfy.

Dry Halogens at Temperature

Chlorination and HCl synthesis trains run on pure nickel's chloride-film stability — a franchise shared with few materials at any price.

The Friendliest Exotic

Ductile, tough, weldable with matching filler, no sensitization or embrittlement windows — the easiest fabrication story in the nickel family, on the page with the hardest chemistry brief.

Know the Ladder

The alkali middle at better strength and price: Monel 400. Above 315°C: Nickel 201, forged to order. Heat plus chlorine attack: Inconel. Wet chlorine: Hastelloy. Facings: BLRF / BLFF / BLRTJ.

Specification Notes — Getting Nickel 200 Right

Three details buyers miss. The 315°C line is a hard rule: standard 200 graphitizes in sustained service above it — if the design temperature crosses the line, the order must say Nickel 201 (C ≤0.02%), and the certificate must show the carbon; we verify it on every 201 heat. Sulphur is nickel's oldest enemy: sulphur-bearing gases and deposits at temperature embrittle the metal sharply — hot flue gas and sour streams are excluded, and even weld-prep contamination (marker ink, oils) follows nickel-practice cleanliness rules. Dry means dry: the chlorine/HCl franchise holds only without moisture — state the water content of any halogen stream first; wet duty moves the metallurgy to Hastelloy territory before any other parameter is discussed.

How Our Nickel 200 Blind Flanges Are Manufactured

1
Forging — cut billet of the spectro-verified N02200 heat — 99% purity and the carbon line confirmed — is hot-forged into the solid disc blank with full heat traceability and segregated handling.
2
Annealing — restoring the soft, fully ductile matrix; furnace charts retained against the heat number.
3
Machining & facing — faces, OD and drilling to ASME B16.5 / B16.47 with tooling set for pure nickel's gummy, work-hardening behaviour; RF serrations, flat face or RTJ groove gauged per B16.20; NPT taps machined where ordered.
4
Testing — tension test and chemistry against the heat; PMI on every piece confirms the purity; carbon verified against the 200/201 split.
5
Pickling — the clean bare-metal surface the caustic or halogen service will meet, with marking of standard, grade (200 or 201), size, class and heat number.
6
Certification & packing — EN 10204 3.1 MTC (3.2 witnessed on request); faces protected, palletised or crated sea-worthy — no carbon-steel contact in transit.

How to Specify & Order a Nickel 200 Blind Flange

Five elements — the 200/201 temperature declaration is the nickel-specific one:

1
Size & standard — e.g. 4″ NB ASME B16.5, or the B16.47 series for 26″ and above.
2
Pressure class & facing — Class 150–2500; RF, FF or RTJ (with ring number) to match the mating flange.
3
Grade & variant — ASTM B564 UNS N02200 (Nickel 200), or N02201 (Nickel 201) where the design temperature exceeds 315°C; EN designation where the project requires it.
4
Service & certification — state the medium, concentration, temperature and (for halogens) moisture; NPT tap size if a test blind; PMI or 3.2 witnessing as specified; EN 10204 3.1 standard.
5
Quantity & destination — to sales@tescosteel.com or the inquiry form.

Nickel 200 Blind Flanges — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Nickel 200 (UNS N02200) blind flange?

A Nickel 200 blind flange is a solid forged disc of commercially pure nickel — 99.0% minimum, certified to ASTM B564 as UNS N02200, EN 2.4066 — drilled to the standard bolt pattern with no bore, used to close pipes, valves and vessel nozzles in the services pure nickel owns: hot concentrated caustic soda and alkalis above all, plus chlor-alkali cells, food and high-purity processing, and dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride gas. It is not an alloy — everything except the nickel is a residual cap. Dimensions follow ASME B16.5 from ½ inch to 24 inch and ASME B16.47 beyond, in raised face, flat face and ring joint facings.

Why is pure nickel the caustic metal?

Because nickel is intrinsically, almost uniquely, indifferent to hydroxides — and every dilution of it dilutes that gift. The caustic ladder runs on nickel content: stainless at 8-12% cracks in hot caustic; Monel at two-thirds nickel covers the broad middle; pure nickel at 99% holds sodium and potassium hydroxide to the highest concentrations and temperatures any common flange metal can face — molten anhydrous caustic included. Caustic evaporators, fusion pots and the hot ends of chlor-alkali plants have specified it for a century for exactly this reason. Where the ladder ends, Nickel 200 is standing on the top rung.

What is the difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201?

One number: carbon, and the famous 315°C line it draws. Nickel 200 allows carbon to 0.15%; above roughly 315°C that carbon slowly precipitates as graphite along the grain boundaries, embrittling the metal over time. Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) caps carbon at 0.02%, removing the mechanism, and serves to around 600°C — the standard grade for hot caustic evaporators and fused-salt duty. The rule is written into every design code: 200 up to 315°C, 201 above it. State the service temperature at enquiry and the right variant goes on the certificate; we supply both.

What is the chemical composition of Nickel 200 (UNS N02200)?

Nickel 99.0% minimum — and that is the entire story. The remaining entries are residual caps, not additions: copper ≤0.25%, iron ≤0.40%, manganese ≤0.35%, carbon ≤0.15%, silicon ≤0.35%, sulphur ≤0.010%. No chromium, no molybdenum, no copper alloying, no stabilisers — this is the one page in our range where the material is a pure metal rather than a recipe. The purity itself is the specification: in food, pharmaceutical and high-purity chemical service, what matters is that nickel contributes no alloying ions to the product stream.

What are the mechanical properties of Nickel 200 blind flanges?

Per ASTM B564 in the annealed condition: tensile strength 380 MPa (55 ksi) minimum, yield strength 103 MPa (15 ksi) minimum, elongation 40% minimum — the softest, most ductile grade in our entire blind range. That is not a defect but a description: nobody specifies pure nickel for strength, ratings run on the grade's own B16.5 lines, and the low yield is paired with exceptional toughness from cryogenic temperatures upward. Where the caustic chemistry must come with real strength, the conversation moves to Monel 400 or the Inconels — with the caustic ceiling lowered accordingly.

Why do chlor-alkali and food plants specify pure nickel?

Two franchises, one property: what pure nickel does not do. In chlor-alkali plants the product itself is hot caustic and wet chlorine chemistry — Nickel 200 equipment survives the cell liquor while contributing nothing to it. In food, pharmaceutical and fine-chemical processing the argument is purity: a 99% nickel surface sheds no chromium, copper or molybdenum ions into the product, which is why caustic food-grade circuits (from soap to cocoa processing) and high-purity synthesis lines write the pure metal into their specifications. The closure carries the same guarantee as the vessel.

How does Nickel 200 handle chlorine and HCl gas?

Dry, it is one of the best metals available. Pure nickel forms a stable nickel-chloride film in dry chlorine and dry hydrogen chloride at surprisingly high temperatures — a franchise it shares with few materials at any price, and the reason chlorination and HCl synthesis trains specify it. The one word doing all the work is dry: add water and the duty changes character entirely, moving toward the Hastelloy end of the map. Chlorine service enquiries should state the moisture condition first — it decides the metallurgy before any other parameter.

Nickel 200 or Monel 400 — when is each specified for alkali duty?

By how far up the caustic curve the plant operates. Monel 400 — two-thirds nickel — covers the broad middle of alkali service with better strength and lower cost, and for most hydroxide circuits it is the sensible specification. Nickel 200 takes over at the severe end: hot concentrated caustic above roughly 70%, evaporator and fusion duty, anhydrous molten caustic, and anywhere product purity forbids even Monel's copper. The honest sequence for caustic: stainless for dilute and cool, Monel for the middle, pure nickel for the summit — and we quote the rung the duty actually needs.

What service conditions does Nickel 200 dislike?

Three, and they are classics. Sulphur is the oldest enemy of nickel: sulphur-bearing gases and deposits above about 315°C embrittle it sharply along grain boundaries — hot flue gas and sour hot streams are excluded. Strongly oxidising acids — nitric above all — attack pure nickel as they attack Monel; that end of chemistry belongs to chromium-bearing alloys. And its own carbon: sustained service above 315°C graphitizes standard 200, which is precisely why the low-carbon 201 exists. None of these touch its home ground — hot caustic and dry halogens — where the pure metal remains the reference material.

Is Nickel 200 easy to fabricate and weld?

Yes — among the friendliest metals in our range. Pure nickel is ductile, tough and readily weldable with matching filler (ERNi-1 / Filler Metal 61), with no sensitization chemistry, no embrittlement windows and no post-weld heat-treatment demands. The fabrication notes are practical rather than metallurgical: it work-hardens quickly and machines gummy, so tooling and feeds are set accordingly, and weld cleanliness matters — sulphur from markers, oils or lubricants on a joint can embrittle the weld zone, so nickel-practice cleanliness rules apply. A blind flange, of course, asks for none of this until the day it becomes a welded spool.

What temperature range does a Nickel 200 blind flange cover?

From cryogenic service — pure nickel stays tough to liquefied-gas temperatures — up to the famous 315°C line, where standard 200's carbon begins its slow graphitization and the baton passes to Nickel 201, good to roughly 600°C. Oxidation resistance in clean air actually extends well beyond either figure; it is the carbon rule, not scaling, that governs. In practice the working windows are set by the chemistry: caustic circuits and halogen trains run well inside these limits, with the 200/201 choice made once, at specification, by the design temperature.

What facings are Nickel 200 blind flanges made with?

All three: raised face (BLRF) — the default — flat face (BLFF) for lined and non-metallic mating equipment, and ring type joint (BLRTJ) where high-pressure practice calls for it, the ring chosen softer than the groove — worth care here, since annealed pure nickel is itself soft. Each facing has its own page on this site. Gasket chemistry follows the service: PTFE and nickel-compatible systems in caustic and halogen duty. NPT-tapped test and dosing blinds are machined and certified at the works.

Where are Nickel 200 blind flanges used?

Wherever its three franchises operate: caustic country — evaporators, concentrators, fusion equipment and hot NaOH/KOH circuits; chlor-alkali plants from cell liquor to product handling; dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride synthesis and distribution; and the food, soap, pharmaceutical and fine-chemical processes where product purity writes the material specification. Nickel 200 blinds close those systems as isolations, spare-nozzle blanks and tapped test points — with the 201 variant certified wherever the design temperature crosses 315°C.

Which standards cover Nickel 200 blind flanges?

The material standard is ASTM B564 (UNS N02200) with ASME SB564 as the boiler-code twin — the nickel-alloy forging standard — alongside B160 for bar, B161 for pipe and B162 for plate in the same metal, and EN 2.4066 (Ni 99.2) as the European designation; Nickel 201 certifies as N02201 / EN 2.4068. Dimensions follow ASME B16.5 for ½"-24" and ASME B16.47 for 26"-60", rated on the grade's own lines. A complete specification reads: 'Blind Flange, RF, 4", ASME B16.5 Class 150, ASTM B564 UNS N02200 (Nickel 200)' — and our EN 10204 certificates state it exactly that way, purity included.
