ASTM A182 F60 Socketweld Flanges — Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205) Socket Weld Flange Manufacturer

Tesco Steel & Engineering manufactures ASTM A182 F60 socketweld flangesduplex 2205 to the tightened UNS S32205 chemistry, W.Nr. 1.4462 — to ASME B16.5 from ½″ to 3″ NB in Classes 150–1500. F60 is 2205 with the floors raised: chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen minimums all lifted against S31803, so the worst-case certified heat still clears PREN 34 — where the old floors allowed heats near 30. That guarantee is why modern offshore specifications write S32205, and why dual S31803/S32205 certification is our routine supply. Same duplex virtues — 450 MPa yield, chloride SCC off the map — with a higher 655 MPa tensile floor. Same duplex rules: no preheat, no PWHT ever, and the socket-crevice honesty carried over from the F51 page. Seawater proper? F53/F55. Facings: SWRF, SWFF, SWRTJ. Every lot with EN 10204 3.1/3.2 MTC. ISO 9001:2015, made in Mumbai, India — exported to 50+ countries.

What is an ASTM A182 F60 Socketweld Flange?

The tightened 2205 in the small-bore pattern. A forged duplex 2205 flange to the S32205 chemistry (ASTM A182 F60) with a machined socket: pipe seated square by geometry, one external fillet weld under duplex discipline, through-bore matched to the pipe schedule. Three floors raised against S31803 — Cr 22.0%, Mo 3.0%, N 0.14% minimums — so every certified heat clears ~PREN 34. Tensile ≥655 MPa, yield ≥450 MPa, elongation ≥25%, solution annealed, half ferrite half austenite, chloride SCC off the map. Sized by ASME B16.5 at ½″–3″ NB, Classes 150–1500; EN 10204 3.1 with dual certification stated on every lot.

What the Guarantee Buys

The Margin Arrives, Not Just the Name

A '2205' order against the old floors could land a heat near PREN 30; an F60 order cannot land below ~34 — the difference between assuming corrosion margin and holding it on paper.

The Designation Modern Specs Write

NORSOK-influenced and current international piping classes name S32205 — increasingly, F60 is simply what a 2205 flange order means.

All of 2205's Virtues, Unchanged

450 MPa yield (~2× 316L), chloride SCC essentially removed, solution annealed with no ageing metallurgy — the F51 page's whole story carries over with the floors underneath it.

Dual Certification, Routine

S32205 sits inside S31803's band, so our heats certify to both designations at once — satisfying specifications written in either era, with the path stated on the MTC.

The three raised floors are the entire difference from S31803 — each of the PREN levers, lifted. Everything else, including the extra-low carbon and the rationed nickel that keeps half the structure ferrite, is common 2205 property. PMI reads the Cr-Ni-Mo-N signature on every piece.

Specification Notes — Getting F60 Right

Four honest notes. An F51-only certificate does not prove S32205: the older designation permits leaner chemistry — if your document says F60 or S32205, order by that name and the certificate will state it; dual-certified supply covers documents written either way. The socket crevice caution stands, floors or no floors: crevice attack is how chloride duty tests 2205, and offshore classes butt-weld wet-chloride duplex lines — sockets belong on hydraulic, instrument, injection and gas duty, and the F60 weld neck covers the rest. Never heat treat duplex on site: PWHT is prohibited — only a mill solution anneal resets the structure. And respect both temperature walls: ~−50 °C below, ~300 °C above — the raised floors improve the corrosion margin inside the band, not the band itself.

How Our A182 F60 Socketweld Flanges Are Manufactured

1
Forging — cut billet of the spectro-verified S32205 heat — all three raised floors confirmed — is hot-forged into the flange blank with full heat traceability and segregated stainless handling.
2
Solution annealing — the anneal-and-quench that sets the 50/50 phase balance; furnace charts retained against the heat number.
3
Machining — faces, OD and drilling to ASME B16.5; socket counterbore and depth gauged piece by piece, through-bore matched to the ordered schedule; RF serrations, flat face or RTJ groove per B16.20.
4
Testing — tension and full chemistry per heat, the raised floors verified; PMI reads the Cr-Ni-Mo-N signature on every piece.
5
Finishing & marking — pickled or natural machined finish; laser-marked with grade, size, class, schedule and heat number.
6
Certification & packing — EN 10204 3.1 MTC with solution-anneal records, dual S31803/S32205 designation stated (3.2 witnessed on request); packed sea-worthy with no carbon-steel contact.

ASTM A182 F60 Socketweld Flanges — Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ASTM A182 F60 socketweld flange?

An ASTM A182 F60 socketweld flange is a forged duplex 2205 stainless steel flange made to the tightened UNS S32205 chemistry — W.Nr. 1.4462 — whose back carries a machined socket: the pipe end seats inside, self-aligned square to the face, and is secured with a single external fillet weld under duplex welding discipline. F60 is the 2205 that modern specifications write: the same half-ferrite, half-austenite grade as F51, but with the chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen floors raised so every certified heat sits in the corrosion-strong end of the band — and with a higher 655 MPa tensile floor. Dimensioned to ASME B16.5 for ½" to 3" NB in Classes 150 to 1500, in raised face, flat face and ring joint facings.

Why does S32205 exist when S31803 already defined 2205?

Because the arithmetic of the original band allowed disappointing heats. S31803 permits chromium from 21.0%, molybdenum from 2.5% and nitrogen from 0.08% — and a heat melted at all three floors carries a PREN of only about 30, well short of what specifiers believed they were buying when they wrote '2205'. Field experience, especially in offshore chloride service, showed the grade performed as intended only toward the top of the band. S32205 codified that lesson: floors raised to 22.0% Cr, 3.0% Mo and 0.14% N, so the worst-case certified heat still computes to roughly PREN 34. That is the whole story of F60 — not a new alloy, but a guarantee that 2205 means what engineers assume it means.

What is the chemical composition of ASTM A182 F60 (UNS S32205)?

Carbon ≤0.030%, manganese ≤2.00%, silicon ≤1.00%, chromium 22.0-23.0%, nickel 4.5-6.5%, molybdenum 3.0-3.5%, nitrogen 0.14-0.20%, phosphorus ≤0.030%, sulphur ≤0.020%. Set it beside S31803 and the three raised floors are the entire difference: chromium's minimum up a full point, molybdenum's up half a point, nitrogen's floor nearly doubled — the three PREN levers, each lifted. Everything else, including the extra-low carbon and the deliberately rationed nickel that keeps half the structure ferrite, is common 2205 property. Chemistry is verified per heat and travels on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC, with dual S31803/S32205 certification stated where applicable.

What are the mechanical properties of A182 F60 socketweld flanges?

In the solution-annealed condition A182 requires tensile strength 655 MPa (95 ksi) minimum, yield strength 450 MPa (65 ksi) minimum and elongation 25% minimum. The yield and elongation match F51 exactly — the working strength of 2205 is unchanged — but the tensile floor rises from 620 to 655 MPa, a side effect of the richer minimum chemistry that occasionally matters when a design code works from tensile. As across the duplex family, the strength arrives solution-annealed with no ageing metallurgy, nearly double an austenitic flange's yield, from the ferrite half of the structure and the nitrogen in the austenite half.

F60 or F51 — and what does dual certification mean?

S32205 sits entirely inside S31803's band, so a heat meeting F60 automatically meets F51 — and most modern duplex mill product is melted to S32205 precisely so it can be certified to both. Dual S31803/S32205 certification is therefore routine and satisfies specifications written in either era. The practical guidance: if your document says F60 or S32205, order it by that name and the certificate will state it explicitly — an F51-only certificate does not prove S32205 compliance, because the older designation permits leaner chemistry. If your document says F51 or simply '2205', dual-certified supply covers you either way. Our quotations state the certification path so the auditor's reading matches the buyer's intent.

F60 or 316L — when does duplex earn its premium?

The same arithmetic as all 2205, now guaranteed. 316L pits in warm chlorides where F60's assured PREN of 34-plus holds, and austenitic stainless cracks by chloride stress corrosion from around 60°C — a failure mode the duplex ferrite half essentially removes. Add the doubled yield strength and F60 often costs less per joint than 316L once wall thickness and service life are counted. 316L keeps clean chloride-free chemistry, cryogenic duty (duplex stops around -50°C) and hot service above roughly 300°C. The F60 twist: because the floors are guaranteed, a specifier writing F60 knows the margin arrived, not just the grade name. Both families ship as socket welds from our works.

F60 or the super duplex grades — where is the line?

The sea, as ever. F60's guaranteed PREN of about 34 carries brackish water, produced water, firewater and process chloride duty with certainty the old F51 floors could not promise — but hot open seawater remains 40-PREN territory, and the super duplex grades F53 (S32750) and F55 (S32760) take those systems at 550 MPa yield. The division written into modern offshore piping classes is precisely these two numbers: S32205 for utility and process chloride duty, 40-PREN super duplex for seawater systems. All of them ship as socket welds from our works, each with its own page; when an enquiry names the service, the quotation names the economical grade.

How is an F60 socketweld flange welded — the duplex rules?

Identically to all 2205 — heat-input discipline instead of preheat-and-PWHT. The joint geometry is standard: pipe bottomed, withdrawn 1/16" (1.6 mm), single external fillet. The craft is phase balance: controlled heat input and interpass temperature so the weld zone neither freezes too fast (excess ferrite) nor lingers hot (intermetallics), with slightly over-alloyed 2209-type filler — whose composition, incidentally, already sits above even F60's raised floors. The two absolute rules: no preheat beyond dryness, and no PWHT ever — stress relief in the 300-1000°C range grows embrittling phases, and only a full mill solution anneal resets the structure. Our flanges arrive solution annealed with records; the joint's phase balance is the fabricator's craft.

Does the socket crevice matter in F60 chloride service?

Yes — the honest paragraph from our F51 page applies unchanged, floors or no floors. The gap between pipe end and socket shoulder is a built-in crevice, and crevice corrosion is precisely how chloride service tests 2205: the crevice threshold sits well below the pitting threshold, so a socket joint gives warm chloride duty its easiest opening. F60's raised floors lift the thresholds somewhat but do not change the geometry. Offshore and marine piping classes therefore butt-weld duplex lines in wet chloride service and reserve sockets for dry, clean or intermittent duties — hydraulic and instrument systems, chemical injection, gas service. Where the service is hot seawater under a gasket, our F60 weld neck page — or the super duplex family — is the honest recommendation.

What are the temperature limits of duplex 2205 (S32205)?

The 2205 band, unchanged by the tightened chemistry: roughly -50°C to +300°C with real walls on both sides. Cold: the ferrite half's ductile-brittle transition draws the line around -46 to -50°C, below which austenitic stainless or nickel steels take over. Hot: between roughly 350°C and 550°C the ferrite decomposes ('475°C embrittlement') and above 600°C sigma phase forms rapidly — so sustained service caps near 300-315°C and no stress-relieving heat treatment is ever applied. The raised Cr, Mo and N floors improve the corrosion margin inside the band; they do not move the walls. A specification pushing either wall gets an honest grade change on our quotation.

Is A182 F60 suitable for NACE MR0175 sour service?

Yes, within the environmental limits ISO 15156-3 sets for duplex stainless steels — ceilings on H2S partial pressure, chloride level and temperature. Solution-annealed 2205 is a listed CRA, considerably more capable than austenitic stainless in mildly sour produced fluids, and the S32205 floors mean the corrosion margin the listing assumes is guaranteed on every heat rather than dependent on where in the band the melt landed. Compliance is supply discipline: solution-annealed condition, hardness within the duplex limits, the declaration on the certificate. State NACE MR0175 on the enquiry and our quotation and EN 10204 certificate carry it explicitly; beyond the duplex limits, super duplex or the nickel-alloy pages continue the ladder.

What facings are A182 F60 socketweld flanges made with?

All three, each with its own page on this site: raised face (SWRF) — the default, with PTFE or graphite-filled spiral wound gaskets by service — flat face (SWFF) for GRP and lined mates common in offshore utility systems, and ring type joint (SWRTJ) for high-pressure wellhead-adjacent duty. Gasket choice in chloride duty deserves care: the joint should not add a second crevice to the one the socket already owns — inner-ring spiral wounds and proper seating stress are part of the corrosion design, not just the sealing design. NPT-tapped test and injection variants are machined and certified at the works.

What sizes and pressure classes do F60 socketweld flanges come in?

ASME B16.5 standardises socket weld flanges from ½" to 3" NB in Classes 150, 300, 600, 900 and 1500 — Class 900 sharing Class 1500 dimensions in most small-bore sizes — with 4" and Class 2500 made to order. Duplex small bore spans the classes: utility and injection duty in 150-600, wellhead-adjacent and high-pressure process in 900-1500, where the 450 MPa yield earns its keep. As with every socket flange, put the pipe schedule on the enquiry — Sch 80 and 160 dominate offshore small bore — so the through-bore matches the pipe ID. B16.5 pressure-temperature ratings for the duplex material group govern the limits; our quotations state them per class.

What details are needed to get an accurate F60 socketweld flange quotation?

Six elements plus commercial terms: (1) size — ½" to 3" NB; (2) pressure class — 150 to 1500; (3) facing — SWRF, SWFF or SWRTJ with ring number; (4) the pipe schedule — Sch 40, 80 or 160, so the through-bore matches the pipe ID; (5) grade detail — F60/S32205, with dual S31803/S32205 certification noted if your document reads either way, and NACE MR0175 declaration if sour; (6) certification — EN 10204 3.1 with solution-anneal records (our standard) or 3.2 witnessed, PMI as applicable. Add quantity and destination and we return price, weight and delivery — normally within 24 hours.
