What is a Union Cross Tube Fitting?

A union cross tube fitting is a four-port compression tube fitting arranged in a cross (+) configuration, with independent double-ferrule compression connections on all four ports. Two ports form an inline pair (the run) and two ports branch off at 90° in opposite directions — creating a single junction point where one tubing line can be split into three, three lines can merge into one, or four instrument lines can be interconnected in a compact manifold arrangement.

Also referred to as a 4-way union or union four-way fitting, the cross is less common than a union tee but essential wherever a fourth instrument connection is needed at the same junction. Tesco Steel manufactures union cross fittings under the TES-LOK brand, dimensionally compatible with Swagelok, Parker A-LOK, and Ham-Let equivalents. All four ports carry the same re-makeable double-ferrule design — disconnect and reconnect any port independently without disturbing the others.

Key Advantages

4-Way Distribution

Split one instrument line to three destinations — or combine three lines at one point — without any additional tees, elbows, or adapters.

Re-makeable All Four Ports

Each port has independent double-ferrule compression — disconnect, replace, or extend any single tube leg without disturbing the other three.

Compact Manifold Point

Replaces the equivalent of two tees plus connecting tubing — saving space and reducing leak points in dense instrument panel layouts.

Brand Compatible

Dimensionally interchangeable with Swagelok, Parker A-LOK, and Ham-Let union cross fittings — drop-in replacement.

Corrosion Resistant

SS 316 for chloride and marine service; Hastelloy C-276 and Monel 400 for acids, H₂S, and aggressive process media.

Equal Pressure Rating

All four ports rated identically — up to 6000 PSI in SS — no de-rating for branch ports as with some manifold designs.

Union Cross vs Related Multi-Port Fittings

Fitting Type Ports Connection Type Re-makeable? Best Use
Union Cross 4 (+ shape) Compression tube all ports Yes — all 4 Four-way tube-to-tube junction; calibration gas distribution
Union Tee 3 (T shape) Compression tube all ports Yes — all 3 Three-way tube junction; most common multi-port fitting
Female Cross 4 (+ shape) Female NPT/BSP all ports With re-tape Four-way threaded pipe junction
Branch Tee 3 (T shape) Compression + thread mix Partial Tube run with threaded branch off to instrument
2× Union Tee + tubing 4 (via 2 fittings) Compression tube Yes Alternative — larger, more leak points, higher cost

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a union cross tube fitting?
A union cross tube fitting is a four-port compression fitting in a cross (+) shape, with double-ferrule compression connections on all four ports. It creates a re-makeable four-way junction where one tube line can split to three, or three lines can converge to one. It is also called a 4-way union or union four-way fitting.
How does a union cross differ from a union tee tube fitting?
A union tee has three ports in a T shape — one inline pair and one 90° branch. A union cross has four ports in a + shape — two inline ports and two lateral ports at 90° to each other. The cross provides one extra re-makeable connection versus the tee, enabling four-way distribution or combining from a single compact body without cascading tees.
What are the typical applications of a union cross tube fitting?
Key applications include calibration gas distribution (splitting one gas supply to multiple analyzers), multi-instrument pressure headers (one process tapping to four transmitters), heat exchanger monitoring manifolds, pressure test manifolds during instrument calibration, UHP gas panel cross-connections in semiconductor fabs, and hydraulic test panel multi-point connections.
What sizes and materials are available for TES-LOK union cross fittings?
TES-LOK union cross fittings are available in fractional ODs from 1/16" to 2" and metric ODs from 2 mm to 50 mm — equal on all four ports. Materials include SS 304, SS 316, Brass, Monel 400, Inconel 600, Hastelloy C-276, and Titanium Gr. 2, with ISO 9001:2015 certification and NABL-traceable material test reports.
What is the pressure rating of a union cross tube fitting?
SS 304 and SS 316 TES-LOK union cross fittings are rated up to 6000 PSI (413 bar) equally on all four ports. Brass variants are rated 300–3000 PSI depending on tube OD. There is no de-rating for the branch ports — all ports carry the full body pressure rating.
Can a union cross be supplied with different ODs on its ports?
The standard TES-LOK union cross is an equal cross — all four ports accept the same tube OD. For mixed-OD requirements, the recommended approach is an equal cross plus reducing unions at the ports requiring a different tube size. Custom reducing cross configurations can be quoted on request for specific project needs.
How does a union cross compare to a female cross tube fitting?
A union cross has compression tube (OD grip) connections on all four ports — used for four-way tube-to-tube junctions. A female cross has female NPT/BSP threaded ports — used for four-way threaded pipe connections or connecting to male-threaded instrument stems. The union cross is the correct choice for instrument tubing systems; the female cross for threaded pipework.
What industries use union cross tube fittings?
Union cross fittings are used across oil and gas (calibration gas racks, multi-analyzer sample headers), chemical and petrochemical (four-point instrument distribution), power generation (heat exchanger instrument manifolds), semiconductor (UHP gas distribution nodes), shipbuilding (hydraulic panel cross-connections), and laboratory settings wherever a compact, serviceable four-way tube junction is required.
