What is a Bulkhead Union Tube Fitting?

A bulkhead union tube fitting is a compression tube fitting engineered to pass instrument tubing through a panel, wall, enclosure, or bulkhead barrier while maintaining a full union — re-makeable — connection on both sides. The fitting body is extended and threaded, accepting a hex panel locknut that clamps firmly against the inner face of the panel when tightened. Once the fitting is secured through the panel, tubing on either side connects via standard double-ferrule compression, exactly like a regular union.

This design is indispensable wherever instrument lines must transition between a classified (hazardous) area and a safe area — for example, from an outdoor offshore deck into an analyzer shelter, or from a process plant into a control room junction box. The Tesco Steel TES-LOK bulkhead union provides a gas-tight, high-pressure-rated penetration point that can be serviced, disconnected, and re-made on both sides without disturbing the panel installation.

Key Advantages

Panel Feed-Through

Extended body with hex locknut mounts securely through enclosure walls, junction boxes, and analyzer shelter panels.

Re-makeable Both Sides

Full union compression on both sides — disconnect and reconnect tubing independently on either face of the panel.

Gas-Tight Penetration

Metal-to-metal ferrule seat provides a gas-tight, pressure-rated seal — critical for hazardous-area / safe-area barriers.

Brand Compatible

Dimensionally interchangeable with Swagelok, Parker A-LOK, and Ham-Let bulkhead unions — direct drop-in replacement.

Corrosion Resistant

SS 316 with Mo addition for chloride and marine resistance; alloy grades for H₂S, acids, and high-temperature service.

Global Thread Variants

NPT, BSP, BSPT, UNF, ISO, SAE — one manufacturer for every regional installation requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bulkhead union tube fitting?
A bulkhead union tube fitting is a compression tube fitting designed to pass instrument tubing through a panel, wall, or enclosure. Its extended threaded body accepts a hex locknut that mounts the fitting securely through the panel. Both ends are standard compression union connections, allowing tubing on either side to be independently connected and disconnected without cutting the tube or removing the fitting from the panel.
How does a bulkhead union differ from a standard union tube fitting?
A standard union connects two tubes inline in open space with no panel-mounting provision. A bulkhead union has a longer threaded body with a panel locknut, designed specifically to feed through and mount in a panel wall — creating a gas-tight, pressure-rated penetration point with re-makeable union connections on both faces of the panel. This is essential for hazardous-area / safe-area tubing barriers in oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation facilities.
What panel thickness can a TES-LOK bulkhead union accommodate?
TES-LOK bulkhead union fittings accommodate panel thicknesses typically from 3 mm to 12 mm, depending on fitting size. The threaded body length and locknut engagement are sized to clamp securely within this range. Custom variants for thicker enclosure walls (up to 20 mm) are available on request.
What brand and standard does Tesco Steel use for bulkhead union fittings?
Tesco Steel manufactures bulkhead union fittings under the TES-LOK brand to ASTM D1710 and ASTM D3294 standards. TES-LOK bulkhead unions are dimensionally compatible with Swagelok, Parker A-LOK, and Ham-Let equivalents. All fittings carry ISO 9001:2015 certification with full NABL-traceable material test reports.
What sizes and materials are available?
TES-LOK bulkhead union tube fittings are available in fractional sizes from 1/16" OD to 2" OD and metric sizes from 2 mm to 50 mm OD. Material options include SS 304, SS 316, Brass, Monel 400, Inconel 600, Hastelloy C-276, and Titanium Gr. 2. Thread forms: NPT, BSP, BSPT, UNF, ISO, and SAE.
What is the pressure rating of stainless steel bulkhead union fittings?
SS 304 and SS 316 TES-LOK bulkhead union fittings are rated up to 6000 PSI (413 bar). Brass variants are rated 300 PSI, 1000 PSI, or 3000 PSI depending on tube OD. The actual working pressure is governed by the tube wall thickness, material grade, and operating temperature.
What industries use bulkhead union tube fittings?
Bulkhead union fittings are essential wherever instrument lines must pass through a barrier between a classified hazardous area and a safe zone — most notably in oil & gas (analyzer shelters, offshore panels), chemical and petrochemical plants (enclosure penetrations), power generation (control room entries), semiconductor fabs (gas cabinet walls), shipbuilding (deck and machinery space penetrations), and pharmaceutical clean-rooms.
How is a TES-LOK bulkhead union tube fitting installed?
Drill or punch the panel to the correct hole diameter for the fitting body thread. Insert the fitting body through the hole from the process (outside) face. Thread the hex locknut onto the body from the safe (inside) face and torque to the specified value to clamp the fitting to the panel. Connect the tube on each side using the standard TES-LOK compression procedure — finger-tighten the nut, then advance 1¼ turns for initial make-up. Subsequent re-makes require only ¼ turn to re-seat the ferrules.
