'SHAPING INDUSTRIES WITH THE FINEST STEEL'

Lip Type Flanges Manufacturer

Tesco Steel & Engineering manufactures lip type flanges — special flanges with a projecting lip on the face or bore that forms a lip-seal or lip-weld connection for non-standard, leak-tight joints. Because the lip detail is application-specific, lip type flanges are made to a standard pattern or fully to customer dimensions. Supplied in weld-neck, slip-on, and blind styles in A105, SS 304/316/321, Duplex, Monel, Inconel, and Hastelloy. Class 150 to 2500, PN1 to PN400. ISO 9001:2015 certified. Made in India.

Lip Type Flange

What Is a Lip Type Flange?

Definition: A Lip Type Flange is a special flange that carries a projecting “lip” — a raised collar, rim, or land machined on the flange face or bore — used to form a lip-seal or lip-weld connection rather than a conventional flat gasketed face. The lip can locate and confine a seal/gasket, or provide a thin edge for a seal weld (lip weld) to thin-wall pipe, tube, sheet, or a lined/clad component. Because the lip geometry is dictated by the mating part and the sealing method, lip type flanges are a special, made-to-order item — produced to a standard pattern where one exists, or fully to the customer's drawing and dimensions. They are used where a standard raised-face joint is unsuitable, such as on lined pipe, thin-wall vessels, or specialised sealing applications.

Lip type flanges are a special-products / custom flange line. Tesco Steel & Engineering manufactures them to drawing in the full material range alongside standard slip-on, weld-neck, and lapped-joint flanges — see the flange dimensions charts and our special products range.

Lip Type Flange — Key Features

1
Projecting lip: A raised collar/rim or thin sealing land on the face or bore distinguishes it from a flat-faced flange.
2
Lip-seal or lip-weld: The lip either confines/locates a seal or gasket, or provides an edge for a seal (lip) weld to a thin-wall or lined part.
3
Special connection: Designed for joints where a standard raised-face gasketed connection is not suitable.
4
Standard or custom: Made to a standard pattern where one applies, or entirely to the customer's drawing and dimensions.
5
Full material range: Forged/machined in carbon, stainless, duplex, and nickel alloys to suit the service.

Specification & Installation Guide

1
Provide the lip detail: Give the lip geometry, sealing/welding method, and the mating part so the flange can be made to match.
2
Confirm size, class & material: Specify the NPS, pressure class/PN, flange style (WN/SO/blind), and material for the service.
3
Machine the lip: The lip is machined to drawing to a standard pattern or your custom dimensions.
4
Seal or weld the joint: Make the lip-seal (with the specified seal/gasket) or the lip (seal) weld per a qualified procedure.
5
Inspect & test: Verify the lip dimensions and joint, with NDT and pressure test as required, before service.
⚠ Define the lip geometry & sealing method up front: Because a lip type flange is a special, application-specific item, the lip detail, mating part, and sealing or welding method must be defined on a drawing before manufacture — a mismatched lip will not seal or weld correctly. Confirm size, class, material, and (for lip welds) a qualified welding procedure, and inspect the lip dimensions before assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is a lip type flange?

A lip type flange is a special flange with a projecting lip — a raised collar, rim, or sealing land on the face or bore — used to form a lip-seal or lip-weld connection instead of a standard flat gasketed face. The lip either confines/locates a seal or provides an edge for a seal weld. It is a made-to-order item produced to a standard pattern or fully to the customer's dimensions.

Q2. Why use a lip type flange instead of a standard flange?

Lip type flanges are used where a standard raised-face gasketed joint is unsuitable — for example on lined or clad pipe, thin-wall vessels, or specialised sealing applications — and where a located seal or a seal (lip) weld is needed. The lip provides the specific connection geometry the joint requires.

Q3. Are lip type flanges made to a standard or custom?

Both. Where a standard pattern applies the flange is made to it; otherwise it is manufactured fully to the customer's drawing and dimensions. Because the lip detail depends on the mating part and sealing method, the geometry is normally defined on a drawing before manufacture.

Q4. What flange styles and sizes are available?

Weld-neck, slip-on, and blind bodies machined with the lip detail, in Class 150 to 2500 and PN1 to PN400, sized 1/2" to 56". The style, class, and size are chosen for the service and the connection.

Q5. What materials are lip type flanges made from?

A105/LTCS, SS 304/316/321, Duplex 2205/2507, Monel, Inconel, and Hastelloy. The grade is chosen for the fluid, pressure, and temperature — with corrosion-resistant alloys common for lined-pipe and seawater connections.

Q6. What information do you need to quote a lip type flange?

A drawing or sketch of the lip geometry and the mating part, the sealing or welding method, the NPS, pressure class/PN, flange style, facing, and material. With these we can manufacture the flange to match the joint exactly.

Q7. Can lip type flanges be seal-welded to thin-wall pipe?

Yes — a common use is a seal (lip) weld of the flange lip to thin-wall pipe, tube, sheet, or a lined component, which a thick standard flange face cannot accommodate. The weld is made to a qualified procedure suited to the materials and wall thickness.

Q8. Can lip type flanges be supplied certified?

Yes. We manufacture lip type flanges to your drawing with full material traceability and EN 10204 3.1 material test certificates on request. Send your drawing and service conditions for a recommendation and quote.
